CHURCH HISTORY AND INFORMATION
Did you know
that St John’s Church has a sister?
St James’s Church in Eve Hill, Dudley was built to the same design and opened on the same day in 1840. To see what the inside of St John’s Church looks similar to go along to St James’s and have a look around, or have a look at their website
www.stjamesdudley.org.uk
St James and St John were BROTHERS in life hence we assume the reason for the choice of names for the two churches.
Did you know that St John's Memorial Windows present what is probably a unique feature in a modern church?
About October, 1917, Mr and Mrs Franks of Grove Street expressed their wish to place a memorial in the church to the memory of their son who was killed in action in Mesopotamia in 1917, and suggested a stained glass window.
This offer was gratefully accepted and after much consideration the Church Council appointed Messrs Jas. Powell and Sons of Wealdstone to prepare a scheme for the whole twelve windows.
The general subject was the life of St John and Mr and Mrs Franks and future donors were allowed to choose any one of the windows available.
The windows were arranged as follows
(the windows have now been removed for safekeeping):
North Side commencing at the font
1. St John and St Andrew, directed by St John the Baptist to the Lamb of God "Behold the Lamb of God"
2. Final call of St John "They left the ship and followed him"
3. The raising of Jairus' daughter "Damsel I say unto thee, rise"
4. The Transfiguration "He was transfigured before them"
5. St John at the Last Supper "Disciples whom Jesus loved"
6. St John and the Blessed Virgin Mary returning from the Crucifixion "He took her unto his own home"
On the South side, commencing at the Chancel end
7. St John and St Peter at the empty tomb "He is not there He is risen"
8. St John on the Lake of Galilee "It is The Lord"
9. St John and St Peter healing the lame man "In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk"
10. St John and St Peter confirming at Samaria "Then they laid their hands on them"
11. St John the writer "We know that his testimony is true"
12. St John, the aged, saying at Ephesus "Little children, love one another", "Little children, love one another"
This story relates to events right back at the very beginning of Christianity. The foundation for St John's church was laid on a hill just outside Jerusalem on the first Good Friday. One of the seven first ever churches which continued the Christian faith after the death of Jesus.
